President's Corner

The 2006 FFMA Annual Meeting in Palm Beach set a new record with approximately 150 attendees! Kudos to Rick Hamilton, Program Chair, and his team for the great agenda they put together. There are numerous details that go into the planning of this
huge meeting and we are grateful to Executive Director Cherie Worley for her outstanding job in attending to them. In addition special thanks to our sponsors who help make the Conference one of value and quality. To that end I’m confident you will
support them when it comes time to purchase their products and services for your venues.

Many thanks to Robert Freeman, Jeff Hartzog and their staff for hosting the recent Operations Seminar at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. It was another huge success with over 80 attendees who participated in an exciting program and networked with industry professionals.

One of our goals this year is to increase membership and I trust that you will help me encourage those within the state who are not members to join us. Also, if you happen to have a number two person in your organization who has not become a member please support their professional growth through FFMA membership. By the way, in case you’re not aware of it, we do offer a discount for second and third members from the same venue.....a great incentive.

We have partnered with the City of Tampa in a sustainability initiative to reduce waste and encourage recycling. Please take the time to complete the “FFMA Venue Manager Survey” at their Recycling Programs Web site at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=470862418275. It will only take a few minutes and the results will be available to FFMA members who complete the survey as
well as presented at our June 17-19, 2007 Annual Conference. The deadline to submit your responses is October 31st! Thank you for your continued involvement in FFMA.

Legislative Updates from FFMA Lobbyist, Wayne Malaney, Esq.

Summer is quite as far as legislation is concerned. I have had conversations with a House and Senate member to act as sponsors for FFMA's legislation during the '07 Session. However, until the general election in November, the members cannot file bills. Bills may be submitted to bill drafting by members without opposition. But, at this stage I have focused on incumbent members who have expressed an interest in handling your legislation. Those members have opposition but are expected to win handily.

The legislation that is expected to be filed will be language to make permanent the
current tax exemption which has the largest tax impact. I will meet with the Finance
and Tax staff to determine, when preparing their fiscal impact report, which area they
identified as having the most impact.

In the meantime, I encourage you, as always to get to know your local legislative
delegation. If you are inclined to support a candidate do so in a way that you are
comfortable with. Monetary contributions are always welcome and one of the simplest
ways to give. But, remember just putting a sign in your yard is appreciated. You'd be
surprised at how many neighbors may be swayed by your action. You may also wish to
volunteer by stuffing envelopes or making phone calls on behalf of your favorite candidate. If you don't have a particular interest in a legislative race, don't over look county and city commission races. Your commissioners have the ear of your legislators. Since so many of you are owned and operated by local government your commissioners need/want to be educated on the FFMA issues. They are a very valuable resource, as are you.

On The Move

Okeechobee County Agri-Civic Center
ALBANY, Georgia—Albany’s city manager announced his top choice for the city’s next Civic Center executive director. Alfred Lott chose John T. Mazzalo, facilities director for the Okeechobee County Agri-Civic Center, a 2,500 seat open air equestrian facility. Lott said a panel of residents and a panel of city personnel picked Mazzalo as the best qualified of three candidates “with a very large margin. I agreed with the panel’s selection.” Lott noted Mazallo has “exceptional knowledge of the facilities management
business … (and) understands the concert business.” He also has experience in business administration and a degree in sports administration.

Mazzalo has served in venue management for Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Games and as the general manager for the USF Sun Dome (Tampa, Florida) and the Florence (SC) Civic Center, among other management jobs in the public assembly facility industry. CONGRATS TO JOHN!

News from Around the State

Live Nation to Buy House of Blues
Live Nation will buy HOB Entertainment Inc., the company that operates House of Blues
venues including one in Orlando, for $350 million in cash, the company stated. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2006. Besides the Orlando site, HOB operates 10 other House of Blues venues in cities including Los Angeles and Chicago, and eight amphitheaters in cities including Atlanta, Toronto, San Diego and Dallas.

Live Nation says the acquisition will help it expand its presence in the growing midsize venue business and fill in geographic gaps in its existing amphitheater network. Los Angeles-based Live Nation (NYSE: LYV) owns, operates or has booking rights for 153 venues worldwide. HOB Entertainment is also based in Los Angeles.

March Madness Comes to Miami:
Miami to Host 2009 NCAA Division I Basketball First and Second Rounds

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced today that Miami has
been selected to serve as one of the host sites for the first and second round of the 2009 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Miami-Dade Sports Commission
(MDSC), Florida International University, the University of Miami, the AmericanAirlines
Arena, and the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) collaborated on
the bid to bring March Madness back to Miami for the first time since 1994.

The event will be held at the AmericanAirlines Arena on March 19 and 21 (Thursday and
Saturday) or March 20 and 22 (Friday and Sunday), 2009. Eight teams, out of the field of 65, will play a total of six games over the two days, with two teams advancing to the
“Sweet 16”.

March 2009 will be only the second time that Miami has hosted the NCAA Tournament,
with the Regional Finals in 1994 at the Miami Arena being the first. “We are honored that
Miami has been selected to host the first and second Rounds of the 2009 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship,” states Mike Sophia, Executive Director of the MDSC.
“Our community has a proud sports tradition, we have great partners and facilities, and
a commitment to continue to welcome these kinds of events to Miami-Dade County.”

The Lakeland Center
Not many facilities get to host a World premier event, even more rare would be two.
Feld Entertainment presented the opening of the Disney on Ice Spectacular, Princess
Wishes, over the Labor day weekend in the Jenkins arena. Then, on Sept 23rd Feld Entertainment hosted the opening of a new Theatrical tour for the Disney group the Doodlebops in the Youkey Theater. Both of these events have been well received and are proving to be great successes for Feld and Disney, and the Lakeland Center.

BankUnited Center
The BankUnited Center's Global Spectrum staff is never willing to rest on its laurels but
rather continues to push the envelope to prove that we truly can do it all and this
summer was no exception. On July 13, the venue pulled off another successful
sold-out event as Univision hosted the 3rd Annual Premios Juventud award show.
Stylized in an aquatic theme, fans watched their favorite celebrities arrive
on a blue carpet, greeters were dressed in swimsuits and the stage inside the
7,000+ seat arena was decked out with a wading pool, giant slide and porthole
viewing screens. Global Spectrum General Manager Patrick L. McGrew said, "This
event is by far one of the most logistically challenging undertakings that we've done for the past two years. It's a testament to our staff's successful execution of the event however that Univision continues to come back year after year and having our venue showcased nationally and internationally in the spanish-speaking world is well worth the effort."

Not to be outdone, another Hispanic television network made themselves at home at the
BankUnited Center for a much more intimate gathering of 1000 of their closest friends. On August 17, MTV Latin America filmed the 19th installment of the MTV Unplugged series with Puerto Rican superstar Ricky Martin. The intricacy of the set-up with lighting, curtains and smoke machines among other things transformed
the venue into a setting that made each guest feel as though they were experiencing the event in their living room. "The ability to make a 7,000+ seat venue feel as warm and inviting as a club or small theater is a major coup that we hope will attract lots of new shows and promoters who may not have considered us before", commented Global
Spectrum Director of Marketing Heidi M. Palmer.

BankUnited Center Welcomes New Event Manager:
The newest member of the BankUnited Center's Operations staff is Event Manager Elisabeth Wardle. Previous experience as the Event Manager at South Carolina's 15,000-seat Bi-Lo Center has given Elisabeth a broad range of knowledge for executing challenging events such as Ringling Brothers, Monster Trucks and sell-out concerts including Tim & Faith and Kenny Chesney.

Despite the challenge of relocating during the impending strike of Hurricane Ernesto in
early September, Wardle said "South Florida's laid back style is a perfect fit for me and
I'm very much looking forward to working with everyone here at the BankUnited Center and utilizing all of Global Spectrum's resources to make each event a success."

Global Spectrum General Manager Patrick L. McGrew added, "We are truly excited to
welcome Elisabeth into the Global Spectrum family. Her exuberance, organizational
skills and professionalism will be a tremendous asset to the continued level of excellence
we strive for with each event."

ORLANDO CENTROPLEX:
"Extreme Makeover - Community Venues Edition"

The Orlando Centroplex stars in its own “Extreme Makeover – Community Venues Edition,” as organizational changes became effective Wednesday, August 23. With the venues expansion of the Orlando Centroplex to include Harry P. Leu Gardens and the Mennello Museum of American Art, the organizational improvements address the needs of streamlining the business to operate more effectively and efficiently to better serve the community. This comes at a time as the Orlando Centroplex heads towards its mission of becoming one of the country’s most progressive and diversified cultural, sports and live entertainment venues. Allen Johnson, Director states, “because of the increase in venues under our department and the increase in activity and events in our
venues, it was necessary to reallocate our resources into three divisions to better serve our customers. The high level of experience, professionalism and dedication of these three individuals leading these divisions will ensure improved customer satisfaction and a greater impact to our region. By focusing our resources in a directed manner, we are able to also improve our financial outlook.”

The organizational chart incorporates three new divisions under the umbrella of Orlando Centroplex. The divisions include TD Waterhouse Centre & Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre (Division 1), Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium & Tinker Field and (Division 2), Gardens, Galleries & Museums (Division 3), which includes Harry P. Leu Gardens, Mennello Museum of American Art and Public Art Program. Michael Thompson will oversee Division 1, Jon Dorman will oversee Division 2 and Robert Bowden to oversee Division 3. Division Managers will handle the operational aspects under the direction of Allen Johnson, Orlando Centroplex Director.

The new organization focuses on the operational functions of the way we do business. These improvements also support the addition of Harry P. Leu Gardens and the Mennello Museum of American Art, which enhances the scope of our city’s cultural enrichment.

"The Dream is Alive!"
Mayors Buddy Dyer (Orlando) and Rich Crotty (Orange County) unveiled on Friday, September 29 at a press conference at the Orlando Regional History Center that negotiations on a deal for a new arena, performing arts centre and renovated Citrus Bowl are very close to agreements. This assures to community that the Orlando Magic will remain in Downtown Orlando.

Mayor Dyer’s steadfast resolve to keep the arena in the thriving Downtown core paid off, as options for an arena adjacent to the Orange County Convention Center were brought to a halt. A private developer introduced a plan but talks have since ceased.
This ambitious, unified effort by Mayors Buddy Dyer and Rich Crotty is indeed a monumental event; a pinnacle moment in our community and region’s history. The future of the Central Florida Community will be realized by the visionary efforts of all involved and the fabric of our community is forever strengthened.

"Shakira's Hips Don't Lie and Her Numbers Don't Either!"
Shakira shook her hips to a vivacious, sold out crowd of over 12,500 at the TD Waterhouse Centre, September 13. Shakira’s high energy electrified fans throughout the evening with moves that would make even Madonna jealous.

Wyclef Jean opened the show with his 30 minute set. He impressed fans with his guitar solo while picking his guitar behind his back and even with his teeth. After his solo, Wyclef assured his fans that he was a rapper first and foremost.

Shakira opened the evening with “Estoy Aqui,” blended the performance with both Spanish and English songs and never looked back. She continued to amaze fans and engaged the crowd, as she played her pink, sequined guitar for “Don’t Bother” and later in the set played harmonica. Shakira’s show was no doubt a “rock” solid event!

Stephen C. O'Connell Center
Gainesville, Florida, September 22, 2006 – Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame group Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers returned home to a sold out crowd at the University of Florida Stephen C. O’Connell Center on September 21, 2006 as part of their 30th Anniversary Highway Companion Tour. “Tickets went on sale July 22nd and sold out in 30 minutes,” according to Lionel Dubay, Director of the Center. “We sold 8,000 tickets and could have easily sold out a second show,” said Dubay. This appearance marked the sixth at the O’Connell Center, the last of which was in 1993 – also a sellout!

The show was promoted by Jon Stoll of Fantasma Productions in Palm Beach, Florida.
Stoll said, “This will be the biggest show in Gainesville’s history with Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Strokes, Stevie Nicks’ special guest star appearance, the live radio broadcast, and video taping for a Tom Petty documentary, which probably will be released in early 2007.”

Garage rock band The Strokes opened the concert and Petty’s long time friend Stevie
Nicks made a surprise appearance to sing a few duets with him. The crowd was especially excited when the pair sang their hit single “Stop Dragging My Heart Around,” which they originally recorded in 1981.

Thomas Earl Petty was born in Gainesville on October 20, 1950. When he was eleven years old he became inspired to be a musician when Elvis Presley was working on the film“Follow That Dream” in Ocala. In 1970 after a number of years playing local clubs in
Gainesville Petty, his guitarist Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench on keyboards, then
known as Mudcrutch, left for Los Angeles in search of a record label. The band found Shelter Records in 1974 and released their single “Depot Street.” Mudcrutch broke up shortly afterwards, which led to the 1975 formation of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have a long history of classic rock ‘n’ roll albums, having sold over 50 million with hits such as “Breakdown,” “Don’t Do Me Like That,” “Refugee,” “Jammin Me” that Bob Dylan contributed to, “Learning to Fly,” “American Girl,” “Needles and Pins” with Stevie Nicks, “The Waiting,” “Free Fallin’” and “You Don’t Know How it Feels.” Over his 30-year career Petty has been nominated
for 16 Grammy awards. Dubay said, “Petty and the Heartbreakers were welcomed on stage with an enthusiastic, standing ovation that seemed to last for several minutes
and the fans never sat down from that point on.” At a press conference prior to the show University of Florida’s First Lady Chris Machen gave Tom a Distinguished Achievement Award and Gainesville Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan presented the band with a key to the city, followed by her officially proclaiming September 21, 2006 as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Day. Hanrahan said, “Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are to Gainesville what the Beatles are to Liverpool.”

Gilligan's Island: The Musical
Dawn Wells and Barry Williams - World Premier February 2, 2007
Coral Springs, Florida (September 7, 2006) – The long-awaited dream of Sherwood Schwartz, creator of “Gilligan’s Island” and “The Brady Bunch” becomes a reality this February when one of television’s most popular shows of all time comes to life as an original stage production “Gilligan’s Island: The Musical”, February 2-11, 2007 at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts.

Two of the original TV stars from Gilligan’s Island and The Brady Bunch, Dawn Wells (“Mary Ann”) and Barry Williams (“Greg Brady”) have signed on to appear in the South Florida world premiere production as Mrs. Howell (“Lovey”) and Mr. Howell (“The Millionaire), respectively.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of this exciting adventure and to embrace my new Gilligan’s Island family,” said Wells. “Natalie Schafer (the original “Lovey” Howell) will always remain in all our hearts as Lovey. Natalie was not only a cast mate, but a very special friend and I’m humbled to have been selected to honor her unique talent on stage.”

Williams added, “as a very young man portraying Greg Brady in The Brady Bunch, I had the incredible opportunity to become part of the Sherwood Schwartz family of shows. I vividly remember the time Jim Backus (the original Thurston Howell III) made a special guest appearance on our show. His special sense of humor and professionalism has stayed with me to this day. I, too, am honored to play “Mr. Howell” in the upcoming world premiere of Gilligan’s Island – The Musical.”

The original script, written by Schwartz, with help from son Lloyd, has been honed in workshops and several smaller theaters over the years. The creative team behind the musical is talented…and family. The lyrics and music (22 original songs) have been written by Schwartz’s daughter and son-in-law, Hope and Lawrence Juber. Hope has often worked with her father and brother on their TV shows, and Lawrence is the world-famous guitarist and composer who has scored many movies and was a member of Paul McCartney’s group, Wings.

Gilligan’s Island is the most rerun TV show in history and was voted one the Top 50 shows of all-time by TV Guide magazine. The original TV show ran from 1964-1967 and has spawned three TV movies, two cartoon series, a reality series on TBS and has been the subject of more comedian’s jokes than the mother in-law. Its theme song is better known than “The Star Spangled Banner.” It has been syndicated on more cable stations
than any other series in history. “Three hour tour” and “Ginger or Mary Ann”, etc. are part of pop culture lore.

Schwartz believes that the classic elements of his Gilligan are very much like “Annie” and contain the same ingredients that made that American icon a timeless musical: classic characters that come together to change the world.

The story of the eight-character “Gilligan’s Island: The Musical” is simple. Beginning with the theme song (selected the #1 TV theme song of all time), these seven familiar characters are shipwrecked and try to get off the island. Natural disasters befall them…hurricanes, quicksand, etc…as they learn to get along and survive. But their biggest challenge is a U.F.O. and its Alien who monitors their behavior. By the end of the play, the castaways manage to defeat the extraterrestrial and save the entire planet while staying marooned.

Interviews are available with Sherwood Schwartz, Dawn Wells, Barry Williams and Lawrence Juber.

Did You Know?

-
Jayne Mansfield turned down the role of “Ginger”; Carroll O’Connor tested for the role of The Skipper; Dabney Coleman tested for the role of The Professor.

- Raquel Welch auditioned for the role of Mary Ann. Jerry Van Dyke turned down the role of Gilligan.

- Gilligan’s first name was never revealed in any of the TV episodes, movies or other projects. Gilligan’s Island: The Musical finally reveals Gilligan’s first name once and for all.

- The original pilot concluded filming on November 22, 1963, the same day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. In some scenes, you can see the American flag sitting at half-mast.

- The ship’s name, S.S. Minnow, was not named for the fish but rather for Newton Minow, head of the FCC in 1961. Minow was the one who called television “America’s vast wasteland”. Sherwood Schwartz did not care for
Minow so he named the soon-to-be shipwrecked vessel after him.
